Reflection on Misrepresentation
In groups reflect on the film Misrepresentation. In terms of gender representation in media, are you represented in the media? If media shapes our society, how does media treat power? What kind of news and issues are reported nowadays? What is 'symbolic annihilation'? How can we as a society combat misrepresentation in media?
Women are represented in the media in a negative way. They are treated as sexual and emotional all the time, and they need a man to help them throughout their womanhood. When it comes to power, women are seen as "bitchy" when they show power, but men are more respected. A lot of news outlets report negative news that they know will receive views. Symbolic annihilation is where a symbol that was once seen as one thing, now has another meaning over time . Encouraging people with different backgrounds to take control over the entertainment industry is a great way to ensure that there is representation.

As women, no, women are hardly ever represented. The message that is conveyed is that what is most important is looks and that women/girls value and worth depend on looks. As for power, it is portrayed that only men can have power. Social media target women by creating high beauty standards. The news that are reported today is more about what women wore versus what they have accomplished. For example, during the 2016 elections, media focused more on what Hillary Clinton was wearing instead of her presidential agenda. Symbolic annihilation is when mass media is portraying women in stereotypical roles of victim and/or consumer. As a society we can stop buying into advertisements/trends, start holding social media accountable and directors.

2. The media shapes our society, how does media treat power? Media is THE power. Media is everywhere and that shapes our society in a way that It’s divided people a lot.
3. What kind of news and issues are reported nowadays?
COVID and fear mongering.
4. What is 'symbolic annihilation'?
If there is no representation of a group then its like that group does not exist.
5. How can we as a society combat misrepresentation in media?
We have to begin to start hiring different people of race, class and sex in production rooms so that we can be more diverse. We have to start depicting real stories that portray real peoples and issues.

ReplyDeleteIn terms of gender representation, we feel like women take up half the screen but are often provided with smaller, less powerful, and assisting roles. When they are given a space in the media, it is often times portrayed through the males gaze which makes the representation less significant.
Media often gives power to those who fit the standards of the patriarchy. Those who are male, white, rich, straight, etc. are favored in the media.
Often times the media is filled with biased, misused, and negative information.
We think symbolic annihilation as lack of representation for a whole group such as members of the LGBTQ+ POC.
A way to fight back against misrepresentation is by continuing to speak up, educate others, and unlearn biases within ourselves.
